Our kaupapa programme brings people together through Ngā Toi Māori. Throughout the year we host exhibitions, whakaari, waiata, wānanga, performances and community gatherings that celebrate Māori artists, share mātauranga, creativity and connection.

Ihirangaranga: from waves, from breath
Ihirangaranga is an exhibition celebrating Te Marama Puoro o Ōtautahi | Māori Music Month; an homage to the Māori music community in Ōtautahi, its many waves, genres and generations.
The name Ihirangaranga describes the energetic vibrations felt in waiata, and the ways in which sound inspires, heals and interweaves us; including its unique ability to awaken mauri, or breathe new life into a space.
This exhibition focuses on the relationships created and fostered through music, the political or cultural movements that it carries, and the intimacy in the process of creation.
We invite you to connect with the physical mahi toi / taonga that make up the exhibition as well as the corresponding program- Ihirangaranga: creation & connection. This kaupapa will run throughout the exhibition period, showcasing music, movement, film, and shared creative experiences.
Spanning traditional, contemporary and experimental styles, each piece and event is threaded together by the whakaaro of ihirangaranga: the connective essence of sound, the mauri it breathes into being, and the waves rippled out by each act of creation.

Pouhine Taonga Pūoro Sound Bath
Join two of our most celebrated taonga pūoro practitioners, Ariana Tikao, Kāi Tahu and Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui ,Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou, for a sonic sound bath session; a transformative experience that merges the ancient restorative power of taonga pūoro with the resonance of karakia and waiata.
This is a free-to-attend event; however, registrations are essential as numbers are strictly limited due to venue capacity.

Te Reo Tautito – He Pō Puoro
An evening of jazz, waiata, and te reo Māori with Te Reo Tautito. Lisa Davies (Kāi Tahu) and Te Kurawhiti Hitchens (Ngāti Porou, Ngāi Tūhoe) will perform a set of modern jazz and R&B, all translated into te reo Māori.

Alien Weaponry:Kua Tupu Te Ara | Film Screening
Join us for a special screening of a documentary following the haerenga of one of Aotearoa's most internationally recognised Māori metal bands.
Spanning more than a decade, the film traces Alien Weaponry's story from their beginnings as young brothers Henry and Lewis de Jong, who formed the band as children, through to international tours and performances on some of the world's biggest metal stages.

Mahi Poi Wānanga with Savanah-Kui Tukariri
Join us for a two-part Mahi Poi wānanga, where we explore the art of poi, a beautiful Māori practice rooted in rhythm, flow, and storytelling.
The first session is a hands-on poi making wānanga where Savanah and her kaiāwhina will guide you through every step.
The second session gently blends technique, creative exploration, and simple choreography in a poi movement wānanga.

Sound Walk: Rediscovering the ways of old
Join Jake Kīanō Skinner for an intimate sound walk that reconnects taonga pūoro with the natural world that first gave them voice.
Departing Te Whare Tapere at 4.00pm, we'll journey together into the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, guided by prominent practitioners of taonga pūoro who will share pūrākau, mātauranga, and live performance along the way.
This is a free event, we kindly ask that you register so we have an idea of numbers for the hīkoi and refreshments.

Sound System Session with Tūrāhui
Slow down, get comfy and listen up as Tūrāhui Payne takes us on a journey through some of his top picks from his vinyl collection, while showing us what his sound system is capable of.
Tūrāhui will be diving into the genre of roots reggae, sharing his insights, some of the history behind each track, and kōrero around sound system culture.

Join us for PAOPAOPAKI, the official wrap-up pāti for Ihirangaranga: creation & connection.
PAOPAOPAKI is a celebration of the vibrant, innovative, and ever-evolving Māori DJ scene that keeps our dancefloors, gigs, and whare-pāti alive. Featuring sets from INFORDIN, LILA, and Tom Plum, expect a night of bass, beats, and pure energy as we come together to celebrate the power of sound and connection.

Putiputi Weaving with Lily Williams
Come along and join Lily Williams for a relaxed wānanga weaving putiputi. Whether this is your first time working with harakeke or you have woven before, all are welcome to come together, learn and create alongside one another.
Lily will guide you through preparing and working with harakeke and the steps to weave your own putiputi. Along the way, Lily will share the tikanga she follows when working with harakeke, with plenty of time to practise, share kōrero and ask pātai.
